In a proactive move to champion the rights and well-being of elderly individuals, Calvary Elders’ Care Foundation recently engaged in constructive dialogue with members of the Benue State Legislative Assembly. The foundation’s advocacy team, comprising dedicated volunteers and staff members, convened at the State Capitol to advocate for policies that prioritize the needs of senior citizens across the region.
During the meeting, representatives from the foundation presented compelling evidence and data highlighting the unique challenges faced by elderly individuals in Benue State, including financial insecurity, limited access to healthcare, and social isolation. They underscored the importance of enacting policies and legislation that address these pressing issues and ensure that seniors are adequately supported and protected.
The discussion centered around several key policy proposals put forth by the foundation, including:
- Elderly Welfare Fund: Advocating for the establishment of a dedicated fund to provide financial assistance to low-income seniors, helping them cover essential expenses such as healthcare, housing, and utilities.
- Healthcare Access Initiatives: Proposing initiatives to improve access to quality healthcare services for elderly individuals, including expanded Medicare coverage, subsidies for prescription medications, and increased funding for senior-specific healthcare programs.
- Elder Abuse Prevention: Calling for the implementation of measures to prevent and address elder abuse, including strengthening laws and regulations, establishing support services for victims, and raising awareness about the issue within the community.
- Social Support Programs: Recommending the development of social support programs aimed at reducing social isolation among seniors, such as community centers, senior activity clubs, and transportation services for elderly individuals.
The foundation’s advocacy efforts were met with positive reception from members of the Benue State Legislative Assembly, who expressed their commitment to working collaboratively to address the needs of elderly individuals in the region. They acknowledged the importance of prioritizing senior citizens’ rights and well-being and pledged to consider the foundation’s policy proposals in future legislative discussions.
As the meeting concluded, both parties affirmed their shared goal of promoting dignity, respect, and quality of life for elderly individuals in Benue State. The foundation remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for policies that benefit senior citizens and looks forward to continued collaboration with policymakers to effect positive change in the lives of elderly individuals across the region.
